Tobacco and the Environment

Virtual Village

In this section you can examine how tobacco growing, manufacturing, and use, affect the environment. Tobacco products can harm the environment during all phases of their growth, production and use. The growing of tobacco causes competition with other food crops and requires the clearing of land. The deforestation leads to problems such as, soil erosion, nutrient depletion, loss of habitat and possibly global warming. In addition, tobacco farming requires the use of large amounts of fertilizers and pesticides. The curing process also depletes natural resources. A large number of fires and amount of litter has been attributed to cigarette use, not to mention air pollution caused by environmental tobacco smoke.
