The National Fire Data Center reports that careless smoking is the number one cause of fire deaths in homes. Fires from cigarettes cause over 2,300 deaths and 5,000 injuries each year in the United States. In 1996, there were
146 burn deaths in Florida caused by smoking. This included 24 children. Tobacco companies design and add chemicals to cigarettes to keep them burning. This is done so smokers do not have to light their cigarettes again and again. This makes lit cigarettes a major fire hazard. A careless smoker who puts or drops a lit cigarette on something that can burn can cause a fire. This is especially a problem in poor countries where many homes are made of materials that burn very easily.
