What is Addiction?

Addiction is the state in which stopping the use of a drug causes withdrawal symptoms and causes someone to want more of the drug. In the past, it was thought that addiction was caused by lack of willpower, poverty, or moral weakness. Today, we view addiction as a disease.

Many factors contribute to this disease. First, the type of drug is important. Some are more addictive than others. Second, the user plays a role. People with a low self-concept may have a greater likelihood of becoming addicted. Lastly, the environment contributes to addiction. Our surroundings may contain subtle, powerful, messages that promote the use of the drug.
